Continued growth will see the largest Ontario field in meet history compete on Saturday, May 13th at the 12th annual London 10,000m, which acts as the 2017 Athletics Ontario and Ontario Masters Association 10,000m Championships. The Championship races will be preceded by Men's and Women's 800m and 1,500m races.
A small but strong field of Women will contest the Ontario Championships at 7:55pm. Physi-Kult teammates Julie-Anne Staehli and Claire Sumner will make their 10,000m debut, while Katrina Allison of Speed River will compete at her first Ontario 10,000m Championship. All three women have had considerable success in the CIS/USport system. Earlier this year, Sumner and Staehli represented Canada at the World Cross Country Championships, which for the first time saw Senior Men and Senior Women compete over the same 10k race distance.
The Men's field also features two 2017 World Cross Country participants in Evan Esselink (Speed River) and Sami Jibril (Newmarket). Esselink is the top seed and 2016 Champion, while Jibril has an impressive four medals, including two wins, from the past five editions of the London 10,000m. Other notable entries include Brayden Seneca, who was narrowly edged out of bronze in a thrilling 2016 finish with Sergio Raez Villanueva, 2013 Champ Hussein Hashi, and 2010 Champ Andrew Nixon. In fact, the 25-man field includes the Ontario Champion from six of the past 7 editions of the London 10,000m, missing only 2011 Champ Joe Campanelli.
Parking and admission at TD Stadium are free for this event. Windsor Timing will provide Live Results. This is the first meet in the 2017 Runners' Choice London Distance Series; the next RCLDS meet is 1,500m Night, taking place on Sunday, June 11th.
