At the first Runners' Choice London Distance Series meet of 2015, Kelly Wiebe and Laura Batterink earned Canadian 10,000m Championship titles, Barry Britt set an Athletics New Brunswick record, and Leslie Sexton, Sami Jibril, and Junior Ehab El-Sandali earned Ontario 10,000m Championship titles, with El-Sandali also punching his ticket to the 2015 Pan-Am Junior Championships. Side two of the 'London Calling' themed series will play out this Sunday, May 17th at TD Stadium, with strong 800m and 5,000m fields lined up.
Tomorrow evening, four sections of Womens 800m will be highlighted by a pair of Ottawa Lions teammates Erinn Stenman-Fahey and Charlotte Gardner taking on a pair of U of Toronto TC teammates Honor Walmsley and Rachel Jewett. Look for several women to take serious aim at the sub-2:10 mark. Five sections of Mens 800m will crescendo with an excellent top section led once again by Ottawa and Toronto athletes, in the forms of Sacha Smart (UTTC) and Sebastian Saville (Ottawa), along with U of Windsor Alumni Club teammates Alex Ullman and Corey Bellmore. Ullman was tantalizingly close to the FISU (World University Games) standard of 1:49 at the recent Hoka One One Distance Classic in L.A., and will look to improve over 800m this Sunday in London.
The first section of 5,000m will be led by strong collegiate runners Bridget Pyke (U of Calgary Athletics Club) and Stephanie MacNeil (Harbour Track). Section two of the 5,000m features Paralympian Jason Dunkerley of the Ottawa Lions, who is the Canadian record holder for the T11 800m, 1,500m, and 5,000m! The last race of the evening will feature a tight field of Mens 5,000m runners, with eleven athletes seeded between 14:40 and 15:00; the top seeds include former Ontario 10,000m Champion Hussein Hashi (Central Toronto), along with Matt Stephenson, Adam Cornwall, and Zain Syed Ahmed (U of Toronto TC).
